Out today with my photography students and ran across this woman and her children. Upon seeing her I immediately wished I'd had my camera! Alas, a cellphone would have to do. I can't wait to see if any of my students were able to get a good shot of her and her home. As a history teacher, I also instantly thought of the famous Great Depression photo taken by Dorothea Lange. #dorothealange

Student artwork that represents Cassy's life in Uncle Tom's Cabin. The most horrific, yet much needed small group discussions came from these artistic representations in class today. One such question was, "Given her lot in life, was it ok for Cassy to kill her child?" What if you could have meaningful, formative assessment conversations in class like this with your own students? How much more important are discussions like these, rather than a test question that asks, "What color shoes was so and so wearing?" #formativeassessments #teachersofinstagram #authenticlearning #loveoflearning #uncletomscabin
